D661 - Diagnosis and Treatment Planning with Special Emphasis on Growth and Development
Description
This course will show the clinician how an understanding of growth and development will affect every treatment decision. We will use hand/wrist films and templates to forecast growth. With this information, a clinician can determine if a case will become more or less difficult as a patient develops. Referrals to a specialist or a surgeon can then be made with a greater degree of confidence. We will then discuss alternate treatment plans for various malocclusions. Current knowledge about several important clinical dilemmas will be reviewed.
- Class 1 crowding- expand or extract? What are the limits of expansion?
- Mixed dentition Class II - growth modification or wait? If growth modification is chosen should headgear or functional appliance be used?
- Adolescent Class II- camouflage by extraction or surgery?
Next we will discuss rules of mechanics that are important in achieving the best possible result, and reasons for stability or lack of it in various types of cases will be covered. And finally many cases will be presented and alternative treatment plans for these cases will be discussed.
Objective
The participant should be able to:
- Relate the more prevalent theories of growth and development to orthodontic practice.
- Use growth and development theories to make treatment decisions.
- Use the template to describe growth inequities.
- Interpret and make treatment decisions based on a patient's hand/wrist film.
- Arrive at alternative treatment plans and determine the best plan for an individual patient.
- Understand and use the envelop of discrepancies.
- Describe and implement a mechanics system that can be used to treat most malocclusions.
- Bend utility arches and use them in early treatment cases.
- Diagnosis maxillary canine impaction and be able to treat both palatal and labial impactions.
- Describe a treatment protocol for TMJ problems that occur during treatment.
- Use the probability index and vertical analysis to assess the difficulty of a particular case.
- Use the mandibular response to determine if treatment has been successful.
