D660-DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT PLANNING WITH SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON VERTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Description:

This course emphasizes the importance of vertical control in orthodontic therapy.  Students learn how to diagnosis potential vertical problems by viewing cephs, models, and photographs.  Case selection based on thee potential vertical problems will be dealt with in  detail.  Different treatment mechanics for deep bite and open bite cases are discussed.  Different modalities for Class II correction will be presented, and the rationale for appliance selection based on the vertical control that is necessary will be discussed.  Finally, an in depth discussion on fitting and use of headgear will be presented.  Treatment planning with an emphasis on goal setting constitutes a major portion of this course.  Students learn methods to discern which goals are important ad should be emphasized  also , a method for determining the ideal anterior-posterior position of upper and lower incisors will be demonstrated.

Bjork's interpretation of growth and development will also be covered in detail.  the course will demonstrate why an understanding of growth and development is essential to arrive at correct diagnosis and treatment plans.

OBJECTIVE: The participants will also be able to:

• Describe the importance of vertical control from both an esthetic and mechanical standpoint.
• Describe Bjork's studies and relate this information to everyday practice.
• Assess the differences between strong- and weak muscled patients.
• Use mandibular morphology to predict how an individual patient will grow.
• Interpret the cephalometric measurements requires to assess a patient's vertical needs.
• Use a bracketing protocol based on the patient's malocclusion.
• Illustrate why arch wires of different load deflection rates are needed in various cases.
• Identify the cases which require transpalatal arches, high -pull  or cervical headgear or functional appliances.
• Demonstrate the use of the Steiner Box and the Holdaway Ratio.
• Understand the methods of Class II correction by utilizing movements in all three planes of space,  Identify cases in which the vertical, transverse or horizontal movements are likely to be most effective.
• Describe a basic mechanics system that can be used in everyday practice.
• Compose a finishing protocol based on the original malocclusion.
• Compare the different types of retainers available.  Design retainers based on the original malocclusion.
• Describe a protocol for early treatment. Justify the decision to treat or not treat early.
